High School Training Programs Need Professional Help
You would think with all the advances we have seen within the sports industry, that there would be many high school strength and conditioning coaches throughout our country, but that is far from the case. In 2017, it was estimated that roughly 15% of 25,000 high schools have hired strength and conditioning coaches to coordinate their sports exercise programs. Many high schools will use a coach or a teacher to coordinate the exercise programs for their respective teams.
Is it good to receive professional help as a high school student-athlete?
It would seem as if an exercise professional would have better advice on how to make the proper strides in growth and development of the human body, just as a football coach would have better advice on offensive and defensive schemes.
The problem is the conflict of interest between the coaches, team, and athlete when receiving outside help from a fitness professional. The student-athlete is still mandated to attend all workouts for the football program while training at an outside location. The athlete is now faced with the dilemma of being over exerted by exercising too many times per day, and not getting the extra help needed to make strides in their individual growth.
Many times, coaches will frown upon a student-athlete for receiving outside help because it makes them feel as if the program they created or are using, is not good enough and unfortunately, often times, that is the case. If an athlete is not receiving the help they need, then they will not be able to achieve the collegiate goals that they have set out for themselves.
The Importance of a Strength and Conditioning Coordinator/Fitness Professional
A great strength and conditioning coordinator is the key to every successful program at the high school and collegiate level.
Injury Prevention- The number one way to win ball games is by keeping your players on the field and out of the training room. If your athletes are bigger, stronger, and faster than your opponents, then they are less likely to get hurt. Football injuries occur when athletes are fatigued, a step late, or simply out-manned.
Programming- There is a time to make gains and then there is a time to maintain. The 8 ½ months during the off-season is when athletes need to be making strides in the weight room and on the stopwatch. This is the time for their bodies to grow and adapt. During the season is the time to maintain all the growth you acquired throughout the off-season. Programs also need to be designed to fit each position group (skill players, hogs, quarterbacks, and specialists).
Many coaches may have great knowledge of the weight room, but do not have the time to master a year around workout program specifically designed to each position on his team. Fitness professionals focus strictly on helping people transform their body in the weight room and in this case, receiving outside help would be in the best interest of all high school student-athletes.
